Three in the morning, a shop light on, a diesel idling while the snow keeps counting itself up on the hood. S&S Automotive and Snowplowing runs Oswego's storms out of that bay — blade down, route in order, drives and lots opened before the alarm clocks go off. Salt rides in the back for the walks and for the packed ruts where tires have polished snow into ice. Some nights it's one push; some nights it's three, with a couple hours of gray sleep wedged in between. Then dawn, and a village that gets to act like nothing happened.
