Out at the Orland Grassland the prairie turns copper in October, big bluestem leaning under the wind, cranes calling somewhere overhead on their way south. A few blocks away the lawns are slowing down too, and Turtle's Lawn Care takes them into the cold the right way — a last handful of cuts as the growth tapers, trimming tight along beds and fence lines, edges held clean while the leaves keep coming down. There is a particular pleasure in the final mow of the year: the yard put to bed, even and striped, waiting on April. The same steadiness runs the whole growing season, in Orland and the towns that ring it.
