About Mow Freedom

The first week of July around Orland Hills is flags on the porch posts, firecrackers after dark, and grass that has just been fed by a long stretch of rain. Mow Freedom cuts through that week and every other one — mower, trimmer, a border opened where the turf wants to creep over the sidewalk. The name is about what a finished yard gives back: a Saturday nobody spends behind a mower. Growth here runs hard from May into September, then eases into a slower fall of last cuts and leaves taken off the turf. A tended lawn is a small piece of ordinary happiness, and it is worth doing right.
