Out at McGinnis Slough the herons come back in March and stand in the shallows like they never left. Ducky Landscaping starts its own season about then, when the ground firms up enough to walk without leaving prints. The first mow is the loudest one of the year — winter litter cleared off, matted spots raked open, a sharp line recut along walks that have taken salt-splash since December. After that it is rhythm: the weekly pass, the trimmed edge, the clippings gone. Orland yards come around fast once the light gets long, and it is a pleasure to watch them do it.
