Come January, bald eagles gather along the open water below Oquawka and the backwater sloughs go silver at their edges. Eagle View Community Health System-Oquawka takes on snow removal and lawn care through that season and every other one: lots plowed, ice kept off the paths people walk from a car to a door, grass cut and trimmed once the river bottoms green up again. A walkway that is simply, unremarkably safe on a February morning is the entire point of the work. In summer the mowing follows the same logic — even height, tidy borders, nothing for anyone to navigate around. Caring for a place, like caring for people, is mostly a matter of arriving before the need does.
