After a heavy February fall, dawn over Richland County is blue and bitter, and the pumpjacks along the county roads keep nodding as if nothing happened. Travis Excavating LLC is already out in it, moving snow off the wide places — gravel lots, shop yards, long approaches where a pickup with a blade would still be working at noon. Big drifts get pushed back and stacked clear of the gates instead of shoved into a pile that will be there in April. Walks and entrances get opened and salted so the first shift can park and get inside. By the time the sun is full up, the ground is dark, the lane is open, and the day gets to start on time.
