By the middle of October the maples on the side streets let go all at once, and every yard in Oak Lawn is ankle-deep again by Thursday. Pete's Lawn Care, Inc. takes the last cuts of the year low and clean, hauls the leaves out of the beds and the fence corners, and leaves the turf ready to sleep. Earlier in the year it is the weekly circuit — mow, trim, edge, blow the clippings back off the concrete, repeat. There is a real satisfaction in that final November pass, a yard bare and combed and quiet with nothing left to do until the ground softens. Then the whole thing begins again.
