At noon in midsummer the corner lots off Harlem Avenue in Niles get no mercy from the sun, and the shade under the honey locusts is the only cool thing for a block. Hollywood park lawn care works right through it — mowing, trimming along fence lines, edging the drive and walk, and clearing the yard when a season turns over. Cut in that heat and you learn to read a lawn: where it thins, where it thickens, how high to leave it so it carries through a dry stretch. There is real pleasure in stepping back and watching the stripes run true across a full front yard. Then the mower rolls onto the trailer and the next block begins.
