Wind off Newton Lake carries a long way in open country. It crosses the fields, comes up the county blacktops, and lands in the yards on the south edge of town. Premier Lawn Inc. mows there, and trims, and edges, and pulls the leaf drift out of the fence corners every fall. Late-summer evenings in Jasper County are the good ones — cut grass cooling off, cicadas going, a lawn that looks finished all the way from the road. Newton and the small towns nearby make up the round.
