Out in Newcomb Township the ground lies open enough to watch a June morning arrive from a mile off, fog lifting off the Sangamon bottoms on the east side and sliding across the bean rows. A Cut Above The Rest mows the yards and acreages set into that grid of section roads, laying lines straight enough to match the fields around them. The best part of the job is the last pass along a driveway, when the edge comes up clean and the final strip lies over all in one direction. Spring and fall bring the clearing work: winter's flattened thatch raked out, then the maple leaves gathered before a west wind stacks them in the fencerow. It is plain work on ground that rewards a straight line.
