Hickory Creek runs green and low behind the yards of New Lenox, and in June the whole village smells of water, silver maple and grass just cut. S.P.K. Landscaping Inc. keeps that summer picture honest — mowing on a straight line, the string trimmer around every post and hydrant, the spade edge along the walk crisp enough to cast its own small shadow at six in the evening. Then the year turns, the creek goes glassy at the banks, and the same yards need a different kind of care: the plow down the drive, the walk cleared, salt worked into the tire tracks by the mailbox. It is one place looked after twice over, in two very different lights. Both halves end the same way, with a property somebody is glad to pull into.
