Out in the Piatt County fields a snow does not so much fall as travel, lifting off the stubble and packing hard against every windbreak and lane it can find. Caveny Farm knows that ground in winter and turns its equipment to clearing it — plowing drives and yards, opening lanes and lots, pushing the banks back where they will not creep in again by nightfall. Long farm lanes are their own problem, and they get worked end to end rather than nibbled at from the road. There is something plain and good about standing at the mouth of a lane you have just opened, elevator lights blinking away to the west, knowing whoever lives up it can get out in the morning. Snow work for Monticello and the farms and towns around it.
