Stripes are a trick of light rather than paint: grass bent one way holds shadow, bent the other it throws the light back. MDS stripes builds them into Monroe lawns on purpose, mowing in alternating passes, then trimming and edging so the pattern has a hard border to finish against. Sun angle changes what a yard looks like between morning and evening, and the same lines can read soft at ten and sharp at six. Level ground takes a checkerboard, while the sloped lots along the hillsides want long runs instead. Either way, somebody pulls into the drive and can see that a person was there.
