October is the hinge of the year around Mendota. Combines run late into the evening, dust hangs gold in the headlights, and one morning the puddles have a skin of ice across them. Red's Landscaping LLC lives on both sides of that hinge — mowing, trimming and fall cleanup right up to the change, then plowing and shoveling once the fields go white and the wind starts moving the drifts around. A driveway pushed down to bare pavement is worth a great deal at six in the morning in January. Come April the mower comes back out and the whole circle starts over, which is a fine thing to be able to count on.
