The creek that gives Mazon its name holds three-hundred-million-year-old ferns and stranger things pressed into stone, turning up in the banks and the old strip-mine ground east of town. Above all of that, Grundy County grows a very straightforward crop of grass, and Cardone's Landscaping cuts it well: mowing on schedule, trimming to the fence and foundation, edging the drives, and clearing out the beds each spring and autumn. Out here the yards run big and the wind runs unimpeded, so a clean cut shows from a quarter mile down the blacktop.
