At the Douglas-Hart Nature Center on the edge of Mattoon the tall grass goes bronze in October and the whole prairie leans one direction with the wind. Hild Landscaping likes working against that backdrop, finishing the growing year properly — last mows taken low and even, borders edged, leaf hauled off the turf before the rains mat it down into the crown. Then the ground hardens, the sky turns pewter, and the same properties want plowing and salt instead: drives opened wide, walks cleared to their full width, entrances kept usable through whatever crosses the open country. Landscape work in a flat, wind-scoured place is about giving a property structure and then defending it. Standing back at the end of a job and seeing clean lines hold in either season never quite stops being satisfying.
