Snow arrives in Marshall along the old National Road, drifting sideways across US 40 while the courthouse square is still one blue rectangle of streetlight. Woll's Asphalt is out in it, opening driveways and lots so the town wakes to pavement instead of guesswork. There is a particular satisfaction in the clean pass — a lot squared off at the corners, salt laid thin and even, walks cut wide enough for two people to pass. Out toward Mill Creek and the Lincoln Trail timber the county roads give up their drifts slowly, and the work follows the storm as far as it goes. By the time the sun comes up over the Wabash bottoms, the day is possible again.
