In January the wind comes down the Illinois River valley with nothing to slow it, and the roar of the water over the dam at Marseilles gets swallowed under a sky the color of the ice on the banks. Jim's Snow Plowing & Ice Control runs into that — plowing drives and lots, cutting through the drifts that pile against the north side of every building in town, and laying down treatment where river damp and hard cold conspire to make walks treacherous. Snow that comes off open ground north of town blows and re-blows, so a drive cleared once often needs a second visit, and it gets one. Steep river-street approaches get particular attention, because on a grade there is no such thing as almost clear. When the whole town can go about its Tuesday like the storm was somebody else's problem, the night was worth it.
