October turns Manteno amber — the maples on the older streets, the stubble left standing in the fields, the low slant of afternoon light. T and J Lawn Services LLC spends it on the last cuts of the year and on leaves, hauling off whatever the wind piles against fences and foundations. A yard put away clean in fall wakes up better in spring, and that is most of the reason to bother. There is something quietly good about the final pass in November, the mower shut off, the lawn short and even under a sky going early to dark. The next morning the frost holds the pattern.
