About Speed E Gonzales
On a Saturday in June, Manteno sounds like one long engine — mowers up and down every block, sprinklers ticking, somebody's radio out in the garage. Speed E Gonzales moves through that morning on a route worked out to the minute, because a lawn cut quickly and a lawn cut well are not opposites. Trimming, edging and a blown-clean walk finish each stop, so nothing is left on the driveway to track inside. The yards near the park hold their green the longest, and it is a good feeling to leave a whole row of them looking level and unhurried. Kankakee County summers are short; the work is to make them look effortless.
