Out where Macomb's farm ground gives way to the oak timber around Argyle Lake, the year has two clear halves, and Belle and Brothers Lawn Services works both of them. Warm months belong to mowing, trimming, edging and hauling clippings; cold months belong to the plow blade, the shoveled walk and salt spread where a step would otherwise turn glassy. Western Illinois wind can pile one night's snow into a drift across a driveway by morning — that drift is the job, and it is gone before the coffee cools. In October the yards get read for a last cleanup; in April they get read again for the first cut. Two seasons, one set of hands, and a place that looks looked-after either way.
