April in this village arrives all at once: the flowering crabs go pink over the parkways, Waiola Park fills up with kids again, and the grass wakes up hungry. Jellsgarden meets it with the first cut of the year, set a little high, then settles into the weekly rhythm that keeps a lawn thick instead of shaggy. Beds get cleared of the winter's spill, edges are re-cut where the turf has crept, and the clippings go away rather than sitting in rows. There is real pleasure in the first mown yard on a block nobody has touched yet — it makes the whole street look ready. Western Springs, Brookfield and La Grange Park are all a few blocks over.
