Northeast of Knoxville the road drops toward the Spoon and crosses at the old covered bridge, and the bottomland there stays green weeks after the uplands have gone gold. Ables mowing and more works the yards on both sides of that ground — big lots at the edge of town, tight village lawns near the fairgrounds, all cut often enough that the grass never gets the upper hand. Trimming, edging and hauling off the clippings and leaves finish what the mower starts. A lawn with a clean shoulder along the gravel says somebody was here and cared how it looked. Out toward Oak Run and Maquon that is the standing arrangement through the growing months.
