East of Henry the land climbs out of the river bottom onto bluff farms, where the wind crosses open ground and finds every lane and gate on the way. Smith Construction, a construction outfit, runs a plow through those months, opening drives, farm lanes, lots and turnarounds wide enough for a work truck and a trailer. When ice pans drift down past the bridge at dusk and the temperature falls in behind them, the packed spots get scraped and salted before they set for the night. Nothing complicated about the goal — clear to the gravel, get the width right, leave a clean line where a lane meets the road. Next morning somebody backs out without thinking about it, which is exactly the point.
