April fog lifts off the Mississippi at Hampton and settles into the low streets until midmorning, and somewhere out in it a tow is easing a string of barges through Lock and Dam 14. Cutting Edge Services works both sides of that river weather: weekly cutting, trim work, edging and cleanups once the ground firms up, then plow work, hand-shoveling and salt when the channel is running slush. Yards down by the water grow differently than yards up the hill — wetter, later, quicker to green when they finally go. Reading the ground is half of it; the other half is simply showing up on the right day. Either season, the finish line is a property that looks looked-after.
