East of the bottoms the ground finally lifts, and the road out of Granite City climbs toward Edwardsville through open fields and old bluff timber. Edwardsville Lawn Care works both sides of that rise, the flat river-bottom yards below and the sloped lawns up top where a mower has to be walked with respect. Mowing, trimming, edging and seasonal cleanup carry the route from the Cahokia Canal out to the Madison County towns beyond it. Late spring is the best of it, when the bluff line shows every shade of green at once and each finished yard adds one more. Coming back down the hill in the evening is a good way to end a day.
