Garrett is a handful of streets set down in the flat black ground of Douglas County, where the wind crosses open fields with nothing at all to slow it. In April the grass wakes up all at once, and Garrett Landscaping Services opens the year with the first cuts — mowing, trimming, and clearing winter's litter off the lawns and fence lines. That first pass is the one worth standing back from, ragged tan giving way to a level green. Through the summer the schedule holds: cut, edge, sweep, and leave the yard as square as the section roads that frame it. The mowing runs from the village out toward Tuscola, Arcola and Arthur.
