Galesburg keeps two calendars, and McCormick's Lawn works both of them. From April to October it is the green one: mowing on a set rotation, trimming the edges true, cleanups in the shoulder weeks when the yard changes character overnight. Then the wind swings around out of the northwest with nothing between here and Iowa to slow it, and the other calendar opens — plowing driveways and lots, clearing walks, putting salt down where the ice sets hardest. There is a particular pride in a drive opened before the household stirs, tire tracks already cut through where a drift used to be. Same properties, same streets, two entirely different kinds of early morning.
