On June mornings the haze comes off Lake Storey low and white, and it hangs over the north edge of Galesburg until the sun burns it away around eight. Gabe's Greenworks & landscaping is usually already out by then, mowing the first lawns of the day while the blades are still wet enough to cut clean. The work is steady and unglamorous — cutting, trimming, edging the beds and borders, hauling off the clippings and the fallen leaves when the season turns. What makes it worth doing is the moment of stepping back: a lawn with its lines running true, its edges drawn, its corners squared to the drive. Around a lake town the green shows up bright against the water, and that is a good enough reason to keep it right.
