Early in October, on Freeport's older west-side streets, the maples let go all at once and a lawn can vanish under leaves between one Saturday and the next. Stokes Family Services keeps up with those yards, mowing, trimming, edging and running the fall and spring cleanups that clear the ground back to green. There is an art to the last cut of the season, low and clean, so the turf goes into winter without matting down beneath the snow. Do that part well and the lawn greens up quickly once the frost finally lets go in April. A yard still looking cared for in late October says something about the house standing behind it.
