About ZMowing

Salt Creek runs the low ground near Farmer City, and past it the DeWitt County fields go on until they meet the sky. ZMowing shows up when that landscape turns difficult — when a January system crosses the corn stubble and lays a foot of drift across every drive on the north side of the road. Plowing, opening walks, cutting through the hard windrow the county plow leaves at the end of the apron: cold, specific work. The good of it is small and concrete — a neighbor's car out on time, a sidewalk you can push a stroller down. Some mornings the sun comes up on a town that is already dug out, and the day simply goes.
