Late in the day the light comes down the river sideways, gold on the water and blue in the shade of the bluff, and Elsah turns the color of a held breath. That is often when JBC Outdoor Services LLC finishes a yard: the last pass of the mower, the trimmer around the fence posts, the walk cleared while swallows work the air overhead. Their days run the length of the river bench, taking in lawns above the flood line, slopes that dry slowly, and thin shade grass under old sycamores. Autumn drops the leaves here all at once, and hauling them away is its own kind of housekeeping for a village that keeps its old faces. What they are after is simple enough, a yard that looks like someone loves it.
