Follow the Fox River south out of Elgin and the trail runs the whole way down to St. Charles — which is more or less the shape of this route. A Couple of Dudes works both ends of that river road, trailer hitched, mowers down by mid-morning, the water flashing between the trees on the drive from stop to stop. Late-summer afternoons in the valley go gold and heavy, and there is a real satisfaction in the last yard of the day: stripes running true, walks blown clean, cut grass hanging in the still air.
