About Turfology

From the bluff at SIUE you can see how much of Edwardsville is simply grass — campus greens, ballfields, and the long green aprons of the neighborhoods spread out below. Turfology treats a lawn as something you can actually read: how it is growing, how it is being cut, where it thins along the hot edge of a drive and where it runs thick in the shade of a maple. Mowing at the right height and the right interval, trimming the borders true, sweeping the concrete clean, clearing leaf litter before the cold sets in — small repeated decisions that decide entirely how a yard looks come July. Spring mornings around here open with dew heavy enough to soak a boot; by the time it burns off, the stripes are laid down and the mower is back on the trailer. The name points at studying grass, and the studying is the actual job.
