Headlights on State Street at five in the morning mean one of two things out here, depending entirely on the month. The Green Machine Outdoor Services runs both: mowing, trimming and edging while East St. Louis is green and climbing, then plowing, shoveling and salting once the bottoms go white and hard. Summer work smells like cut grass and gasoline; winter work sounds like a blade scraping down to blacktop and a shovel ringing on a step. Either way the point is identical — you come home to a place that has been handled while you were somewhere else. East St. Louis and the towns out toward Fairmont City are on the route year-round.
