Fog comes off the Illinois River early and lies in the low ground along Farm Creek until the sun gets over the bluff. Jake's Lawn Service is already mowing by then, deck set high for the heat of July, wheel tracks laid in alternating stripes across East Peoria yards. Trimming follows the fence lines and foundations, and edging opens the sidewalk back to its full width. Clippings get blown off the drive so the walk to the mailbox stays clean underfoot. Grass grows fast in this valley, and keeping up with it is a weekly conversation between a yard and the person who tends it.
