The high road out of Dunleith runs the ridge, and in February the snow up there does not so much fall as travel — fence line to fence line, filling a lane back in twenty minutes after it was opened. High Road Outdoor Maintenance, LLC works that country. Plowing drives and long lanes, clearing walks by hand, spreading salt and ice melt wherever the grade and the wind conspire against a person's footing. In the green half of the year the same ridges get mowed and trimmed, yards hemmed by hayfield and oak, wide open to the sky. There is a pride particular to open-country work: you finish, you look back down the lane, and the line you cut runs straight and complete from the road to the door.
