The township was named for its timber, and the yards around Dry Grove still keep a little of it: an oak out front, a windbreak at the back, grass in between. Cut & Clear Co. LLC handles the grass side — weekly mowing, trimming around trunks and posts, a cut edge along the walks and drives, and every clipping put back onto the lawn where it belongs. Prairie weather does not moderate itself, so a June week can put four inches on a yard while a dry August holds it still; the schedule bends to what the grass actually did. There's a real pleasure in the last pass of a big lawn, when the stripes line up and the trimmer work is already behind you. In autumn the leaves off those old groves come down nearly at once, and hauling them clear is how the season gets closed out.
