The village's old golf grounds were laid out among the oaks on the west side of Downers Grove, and something of that standard has drifted outward into the front yards around them. Turf 10 Services, LLC works to it, mowing on a pattern, edging the walks and drives, trimming what a mower cannot reach, feeding the grass so it comes back thick in the cool of September. A late August evening, with a concert carrying out of Fishel Park and the cicadas winding up, is when a lawn shows what it has: the stripes still holding, the borders sharp, everything watered in. Spring and fall cleanups bookend the year, and the leaves off these maples come down all at once and come down heavy. The result is a yard people notice from the sidewalk without quite knowing why.
