Some storms are polite. Others come down all night across DuPage County and bury the side streets off Ogden Avenue until the parked cars are only soft white shapes, and that is the kind of night Snow monster is built for. The truck goes out while it is still falling, pushing driveways back to bare concrete, then comes around again at first light for whatever the wind stacked against the garage doors. Walks and stoops get shoveled by hand and the slick spots get de-iced, because the last twenty feet to a front door is where a winter is actually decided. Downers Grove wakes up to black pavement and a clean bank of snow at the curb, and the morning belongs to the neighborhood again.
