After an April rain Divernon smells like black dirt and new grass, and the whole village greens up inside a few days. Burtle's Lawn Care meets the season right there, clearing off winter's litter, taking the first cut, then holding a steady weekly round of mowing, trimming and edging into the fall. There's a plain pride in a straight edge along a sidewalk and clippings swept off the porch steps. Autumn brings the leaves down from the shade trees, and the yards get cleared out before the cold locks in. Village streets, farm roads at the end of them, and grass looked after in between.
