Late August in Delavan runs hot and loud: cicadas in the shade trees, dust standing over the county roads, corn taller than a truck just past the edge of town. Mr. Chadwicks Lawn Care works straight through it, mowing on schedule when the grass slows and grows uneven, running the trimmer tight to the fence posts and the mailbox, and edging the walks. It's the kind of week when a freshly cut lawn is the coolest-looking thing on the street. Come fall the same yards get raked, cleared and cut short for winter.
