Seven miles of road connect DeKalb and Sycamore, and this outfit runs that stretch in both directions all year. Spring through fall it is lawn work — weekly mowing, edging, trimming, the cleanups that bracket the growing months at either end. Then October turns Sycamore orange for pumpkin time, the leaves come down, and the same trucks change over to plows and salt for driveways, walks and lots. Winter out here is wind-driven; snow doesn't only fall, it travels across the fields and finds the one drive you just opened. Going around twice is part of the job, and so is the hush of a finished street at first light.
