Double JJ / Snow Removal

About Double JJ / Snow Removal

Two in the morning along the old rail corridor near Water Street, the lights burning orange and the snow going sideways under them — that is when Double JJ / Snow Removal is working. Plowing, driveway clearing, walk shoveling and salt down where the ice glazes over: the whole night is aimed at pavement being ready before the first shift moves. Decatur storms rarely announce themselves politely; they come off the flat ground and pile up fast against every closed gate and garage door in town. The work is done by the time most of the city hears the plow go by. A clear drive at daybreak, salt melting quietly in the dark spots, and everyone gets where they were going.
