Vermilion County keeps two calendars, and Schackmann Lawns and Landscapes works both of them. There is the green one — March mud giving way to the first cut of the year, then mowing and trimming and edging straight through the long humid stretch when the timber out toward Kennekuk goes dark and full above Lake Mingo. Then there is the white one, the flat January mornings when those same driveways need a plow blade and a scatter of salt before anyone can back out of the garage. Running both halves means learning a property in all of its moods: where water stands after a thaw, which corner the wind loads up with snow, where the deck has to slow down for a root. A place tended that closely tends to show it — sharp in June, passable in February, and looked after in either.
