There is a day in April when Columbia decides it is spring — the bluff road down toward the bottoms greens up all at once, and every lawn in town needs cutting in the same week. Vice's Fresh Cuts starts its season right there, with the smell of the first mow hanging in the damp air and the grass stacking up behind the deck. From then until the leaves fall it is a weekly turn: cutting, string trimming, edging the walks and drives so nothing spills over. Cleanups come at both ends of that stretch, clearing the winter off in March and the leaf drop in November. The whole trade comes down to a yard that looks like it has been looked after, and in this town people notice.
