Down off the bluff, the bottomland outside Collinsville grows horseradish in soil so black it looks wet at noon — ground that gives back when it is worked right. Up on the hill the same principle runs a yard: feed the beds, cut the grass at the height it wants, and the place answers. The name says the whole alphabet and the work runs that way too, mowing and trimming through the season, bed edging, mulch, plantings, and the cleanup that puts a period on the day. Late-summer thunderheads build west over the river and arrive in a hurry, so some days are spent putting a yard back in order instead. From the first cut to the last leaf, the list gets finished.
