Chicago's old boulevards run wide and green between blocks of greystone, and on those streets a front lawn is half public property — everyone waiting for the bus reads it. O'Brien Brothers Landscape Design gives the parkway strip between walk and curb the same attention as the yard behind it, mowing even and edging to a line you could snap a chalk string against. Under honey locusts that drop the light down in coins, they keep beds shaped and turf steady from the first cut of April to the last of October. It is unglamorous work and it shows anyway: three or four kept yards will lift a whole block. That is the pleasure of it — a design that ends up looking like it simply grew that way.
