The city's motto is Urbs in Horto — city in a garden — and nowhere is that easier to believe than the North Side blocks between Montrose Harbor and the courtyard buildings west of Broadway. Lawn Love of Chicago keeps its share of the garden: weekly mowing, trimming along walkways and iron fences, edging that gives a lawn its outline, and the cleanups that bracket the season at either end. Uptown yards are small, shaded and much loved, which makes a careless cut obvious and a careful one quietly beautiful. Summer here means evening light coming off the water and grass still cool at eight o'clock. Getting a block of that right is a good day's work.
