Snow does something particular to Chicago's grid: for one hour before the traffic finds it, the whole city is a single clean sheet ruled into squares. TheFruenz landscaping job goes to work on that sheet, plowing driveways and lots down to the surface, opening the walk out front end to end, and cutting the corners square where two walks meet. Steps, landings and thresholds are shoveled and treated so the ice never gets a start. There is real pleasure in looking back down a block and seeing straight lines where an hour ago there was nothing at all. Then it snows again, and there is more of that to be had.
